The Gallery

The Dollar Street Gallery started life as a mid-17th Century twin-gabled wool workers cottage. The building was modernised in about 1720. Stone mullion windows were removed and an elegant two-storey facade with sash windows was added. A fine staircase was also installed. In 1800 the house was owned by Joseph Pitt, Cirencester solicitor and MP for Cricklade, who developed the Pittville area of Cheltenham. In 1868 the building was bought by Legg's the Grocers. The ground floor was gutted and a Victorian shop front installed. In 1900 the family raised the height of the building by adding a second floor and an attic, bought three adjoining cottages, demolished them and added storerooms. From 1971 34-36 Dollar Street housed Rankine Taylor Antiques.
